Social Relationships and Well-Being01:30

Social Relationships and Well-Being

338
The significance of social relationships in psychological well-being is a well-established area of inquiry within social psychology. Research consistently demonstrates that the presence of meaningful, supportive relationships enhances emotional health, while the absence or deterioration of such connections can contribute to psychological distress. Relationships serve as a foundation for emotional support, identity, and social belonging, all of which are critical to an individual’s overall...

Relationship with Other Adult Family Members and Siblings

206
Other adult family members and siblings play a crucial role in shaping children’s social and emotional development. While parents or primary caregivers are often the central figures in early attachment and socialization, other adults in a child’s life, such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles, can significantly influence developmental outcomes. These influences depend on each adult’s personality and may help compensate when a primary caregiver is emotionally distant or...

Continuing Care01:25

Continuing Care

2.0K
Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

943
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.4K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Summary

Researchers developed the Social Connection in Long-Term Care Residents (SONNET) scale to measure social connection in long-term care (LTC) residents. The 12-item scale is feasible, acceptable, reliable, and valid for assessing social engagement and connectedness.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychometrics
  • Social Sciences

Background:

  • Social connection is vital for the well-being of long-term care (LTC) residents.
  • Existing instruments may not adequately capture the nuances of social connection in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and psychometrically evaluate the Social Connection in Long-Term Care Residents (SONNET) scale.
  • To provide a reliable and valid measure for assessing social connection among LTC residents.

Main Methods:

  • Conceptual model development, literature review, and qualitative interviews to identify items.
  • Pilot and field testing with patient and public involvement for refinement.
  • Psychometric evaluation (feasibility, acceptability, reliability, validity) in 52 LTC resident-staff dyads across UK and Canada.

Main Results:

  • The 12-item SONNET scale was developed, assessing social engagement and social connectedness.
  • Both resident and proxy-rated versions are available.
  • Preliminary findings indicate the SONNET scale is feasible, acceptable, reliable, and valid.

Conclusions:

  • The SONNET scale is a promising new instrument for measuring social connection in LTC residents.
  • The scale is ready for use in research and practice.
  • Further validation in diverse samples is recommended.
