Background:

Intensive Care Units (ICUs) utilize high-cost supplies and equipment.
Nurses are primary users and managers of these resources.
Effective resource management in ICUs is key to cost control.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the culture of Iranian ICU nurses' working environment concerning resource management.
To understand nurses' perspectives and practices in managing ICU resources.

Main Methods:

Focused ethnographic method employed.
Data collected through interviews with 28 ICU nurses and professionals.
Participant observation for 400 hours to gather data.

Main Results:

Two key themes emerged: consumption monitoring/auditing and prudent use.
Resource management occurs amidst scarcity and supply uncertainty.
Nurses demonstrate "futurism" in planning, considering guidelines and resource value, with improper storage as a coping mechanism.

Conclusions:

Enhancing hospital supply chain management is essential for effective resource control.
Educational initiatives are needed to improve nurses' awareness of supply chain and storage practices.
Optimizing resource management requires systemic improvements beyond individual nurse efforts.
