Acupuncture at ST36 (Zu-San-Li) alleviates ethanol withdrawal symptoms by regulating hypothalamic norepinephrine levels. This treatment normalizes the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, offering therapeutic benefits.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Integrative and Complementary Medicine
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Ethanol withdrawal (EW) triggers hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivation.
- Previous research indicated acupuncture at ST36 (Zu-San-Li) can attenuate EW-induced HPA axis hyperactivity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the role of hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) in the therapeutic effects of acupuncture on EW.
- To determine if ST36 acupuncture modulates NEergic pathways in the hypothalamus during EW.
Main Methods:
- Rats received daily ethanol or saline for 28 days, followed by 24 hours of EW.
- Acupuncture was applied to ST36 or nonacupoints (tail) for 1 minute.
- Hypothalamic NE and MHPG levels were measured using HPLC; TH phosphorylation was assessed via Western blot.
Main Results:
- EW increased hypothalamic NE, MHPG, and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) phosphorylation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN).
- ST36 acupuncture, but not tail acupuncture, significantly inhibited these EW-induced increases.
- NE infusion into the PVN after ST36 acupuncture counteracted the inhibitory effects on corticosterone oversecretion.
Conclusions:
- Acupuncture at ST36 effectively inhibits the EW-induced hyperactivation of the hypothalamic NEergic system.
- Modulation of hypothalamic NEergic pathways by ST36 acupuncture contributes to its therapeutic effects on the HPA axis during ethanol withdrawal.
