Background:

  • Bathing accidents in Japan cause approximately 19,000 deaths annually.
  • The Yamagata Prefectural Shounai public health center implemented an educational campaign on safe bathing practices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate residents' knowledge and practices regarding safe bathing after an educational intervention.
  • To assess the effectiveness of a public health campaign in reducing bathing accident risks.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was distributed to 3,078 residents to assess awareness of bathing accidents and campaign effectiveness.
  • Participants included individuals who attended public health center events, workshops, or lectures.

Main Results:

  • A high percentage (92%) knew general safe bathing practices, but only 43% knew that water below 41°C reduces risks.
  • Actual practice lagged behind knowledge; only 56% bathed in water below 41°C, and 50% preheated bathrooms.
  • Attendees of lectures showed slightly higher recognition of bathing accident situations and prophylaxis compared to non-attendees.

Conclusions:

  • A significant gap exists between recognizing and practicing safe bathing behaviors.
  • Developing effective communication strategies is crucial to improve adherence and reduce bathing-related fatalities.
