Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

14.5K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

5.0K
Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

711
Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Local Anesthetics: Common Agents and Their Applications01:23

Local Anesthetics: Common Agents and Their Applications

1.2K
Local anesthetics (LAs) are commonly used for various applications in medical and dental procedures. Some of the common agents used are cocaine, lidocaine, and bupivacaine.
Cocaine is an ester of benzoic acid and methylecgogine. It is used to anesthetize and vasoconstrict locally. Currently, it is used primarily for topical applications. It is beneficial for surgeries on the upper respiratory tract, providing anesthesia and shrinking the mucosa. Cocaine in the form of cocaine hydrochloride is...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pain Management
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy is a common procedure with no standard pain management guideline.
  • Effective post-tonsillectomy pain control is crucial for patient recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of oral flurbiprofen spray in reducing post-tonsillectomy pain.
  • To assess the influence of flurbiprofen on other outcomes like bleeding and healing.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
  • 84 patients undergoing tonsillectomy received either flurbiprofen spray or placebo thrice daily.
  • Pain was assessed using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale at postoperative days 1, 3, 5, and 7.

Main Results:

  • Flurbiprofen group showed significantly lower pain scores on all assessment days (P < .002).
  • Patients receiving flurbiprofen required fewer analgesics post-surgery.
  • No significant differences were observed in bleeding, healing, or side effects between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Topical flurbiprofen spray is effective in reducing post-tonsillectomy pain.
  • Flurbiprofen offers a safe and effective option for pain management after tonsillectomy.
