The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Methamphetamine (MA) users exhibit significantly higher rates of untreated tooth decay and overall caries experience compared to the general population. Specific tooth surfaces, particularly in the maxilla, are disproportionately affected in MA users.

  • A covariate-balancing propensity score strategy was employed to compare 571 MA users with 2,755 control individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cohort.

  • MA users were twice as likely to have untreated caries (OR=2.08) and four times more likely to have caries experience (OR=4.06) than NHANES participants.

Conclusions:

  • These findings can aid dentists in identifying potential MA use and developing tailored management strategies for this patient population.
