Cognitive enhancers, also known as "smart drugs," are substances used to enhance memory, mental alertness, and concentration.   • 44 chronic, heavy marijuana smokers and 32 controls completed executive function tests.
  • Tests included the Stroop Color Word Test and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST).

  • Marijuana smokers exhibited poorer executive function compared to controls.
  • Early onset marijuana use (before age 16) was a primary driver of this impairment.
  • Earlier onset and increased use predicted worse neurocognitive performance; WCST errors predicted marijuana use.

Conclusions:

  • Early marijuana onset impairs executive function independently of use frequency or magnitude.
  • Poor WCST performance may be a neuropsychological marker for heavy marijuana users.
  • Further research is needed to understand predictors of early marijuana use and its long-term cognitive consequences.
