Nurse residency programs significantly enhance leadership skills in new Saudi graduate nurses. Participation in these programs leads to improved clinical leadership abilities, benefiting both nurses and patient care.

Background:

Nurse residency programs (NRPs) support new graduates facing demanding healthcare environments.
NRPs are crucial for transitioning nurses from students to independent practitioners and leaders.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of NRPs on the leadership skills of new Saudi graduate nurses.
To compare leadership skills between nurses who completed an NRP and those who did not.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 98 new graduate nurses in Saudi Arabia.
Utilized the Clinical Leadership Survey to assess leadership skills.
Employed descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses.

Main Results:

A significant difference in leadership skills was observed between nurses who participated in residency programs (residents) and those who did not (nonresidents).
Residents demonstrated significantly higher levels of clinical leadership skills compared to nonresidents.
Completion of a residency program was positively associated with enhanced clinical leadership skills.

Conclusions:

Residency programs are vital for developing clinical leadership skills in new graduate nurses in Saudi Arabia.
Implementing more nurse residency programs is recommended to improve nursing leadership and patient care.
Nurse managers and policymakers should consider these findings to strengthen the nursing workforce.
