A novel fish-basket-shaped cobalt cluster ([Co24]) was synthesized and characterized. Magnetic analysis revealed unique spin canting behaviors, including spin flop and hysteresis, indicating potential for advanced magnetic materials.
Area of Science:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Magnetochemistry
Background:
- Complex polynuclear metal clusters offer unique magnetic properties.
- The rational design of molecular magnetic materials is an active area of research.
- Cobalt-oxygen frameworks are known for their diverse magnetic interactions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and structurally characterize a novel, large cobalt cluster.
- To investigate the magnetic properties of the synthesized [Co24] cluster.
- To understand the spin canting phenomena in this unique cluster architecture.
Main Methods:
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction for structural determination.
- SQUID magnetometry for magnetic property analysis.
- Analysis of magnetic susceptibility and field-dependent magnetization.
Main Results:
- A unique fish-basket-shaped [Co24] cluster was successfully synthesized.
- The cluster exhibits two distinct spin canting orders: spin flop and a small hysteresis.
- Key magnetic parameters such as coercive field (661 Oe) and remanent magnetization (0.466 Nβ) were determined.
Conclusions:
- The [Co24] cluster displays complex magnetic behavior driven by its specific structure.
- The observed spin canting and hysteresis suggest potential applications in molecular magnetism.
- This work expands the library of complex cobalt clusters with interesting magnetic properties.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...
