Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the vision-related (VR) and health-related (HR) quality of life (QoL) in patients diagnosed with uveitis.
  • To compare the QoL outcomes of uveitis patients with those of patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 60 uveitis patients, 81 diabetic retinopathy patients, and 70 healthy controls participated.
  • Participants completed the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) for VR-QoL.
  • The Medical Outcome Study 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) was used to assess HR-QoL.

Main Results:

  • Uveitis patients reported significantly lower HR-QoL and VR-QoL compared to healthy subjects (p<0.05).
  • Patients with uveitis also demonstrated significantly lower VR-QoL than patients with diabetic retinopathy (p<0.001).
  • For uveitis patients, younger age predicted lower HR-QoL, while poorer visual acuity, ocular comorbidities, and female sex predicted lower VR-QoL.

Conclusions:

  • Uveitis significantly impairs both vision-related and health-related quality of life in affected individuals.
  • The impact of uveitis on vision-related quality of life is more substantial than that of diabetic retinopathy.
  • Factors such as age, visual acuity, comorbidities, and sex influence the quality of life experienced by uveitis patients.
