Summary

The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) significantly predicts anticipated overall treatment complexity (AOTC) in orthodontic cases. However, objective malocclusion characteristics do not further improve this prediction, indicating IOTN is a key factor.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the correlation between anticipated overall treatment complexity (AOTC) and specific malocclusion characteristics.
  • To evaluate the predictive power of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) on AOTC.

Main Methods:

  • Orthodontists rated perceived treatment complexity (PTC) and AOTC using questionnaires.
  • Malocclusion characteristics and IOTN scores were objectively assessed.
  • Interobserver agreement was analyzed using weighted Kappa statistics.

Main Results:

  • A significant relationship was found between IOTN and AOTC (p<0.0001), with IOTN explaining 22% of the variability in AOTC.
