Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Patient-Centered Care
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Patient-centered care is increasingly important in implant therapy.
  • Limited research exists on patients' pre-consultation perceptions of dental implants.
  • Understanding patient expectations is vital for successful treatment outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess patients' initial information levels regarding dental implants.
  • To investigate patients' perceptions and expectations before dental implant consultation.
  • To identify common misperceptions about dental implant therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 277 patients across three locations (Hong Kong, SiChuan, JiangSu).
  • Development and administration of a 34-item questionnaire on preoperative information, perceptions, and expectations.
  • Data collected between 2014 and 2015.

Main Results:

  • Dentists/hygienists were the primary information source for less than half of patients (42%).
  • While 62.8% felt informed, only 17.7% were confident in their knowledge.
  • Over 30% held significant misperceptions, such as implants requiring less care or having no risks.
  • Younger patients and those with higher education showed more realistic perceptions and lower expectations.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of patients had relatively realistic perceptions of dental implants.
  • A significant minority held inaccurate perceptions and unrealistic expectations.
  • Dental teams must identify and correct these misconceptions pre-treatment to ensure patient satisfaction and successful outcomes.
