Summary

Coprophagia, or eating feces, is linked to neurological disorders, especially neurodegenerative dementias. Haloperidol showed effectiveness in managing this behavior in adult patients.

Background:

  • Coprophagia (eating feces) is an unusual behavior observed in various neurologic disorders.
  • Previous research has not extensively detailed coprophagia in adult neurological conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics and associations of coprophagia in adult patients with neurological disorders.
  • To identify potential underlying pathologies and effective treatments for coprophagia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of a clinical database (1995-2015) for adult patients with documented coprophagia.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, associated behaviors, neurological diagnoses, brain imaging, and treatment outcomes.

  • Twelve adult patients with coprophagia were identified, with a median onset age of 55 years.
  • Coprophagia was associated with neurodegenerative dementia (6 patients), developmental delay (2), and other neurological conditions.
  • Brain imaging revealed medial temporal lobe and frontal lobe atrophy in dementia patients; frontotemporal lobar degeneration was found in one autopsy.
  • Haloperidol was the only medication associated with the discontinuation of coprophagia.

  • Coprophagia in adults is associated with diverse neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative dementias.
  • The behavior may be linked to medial temporal lobe atrophy, potentially resembling Klüver-Bucy syndrome.
  • Haloperidol may be an effective treatment for coprophagia in some neurological patients.
