Obesity rates in Nordic adults rose between 2011 and 2014, but childhood obesity and overall overweight/obesity prevalence remained stable. Prevention initiatives are similar across Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Health Policy
Background:
- Nordic countries have observed rising mean BMI and overweight/obesity prevalence in recent decades.
- Despite regulated societies and obesity prevention focus, trends indicate a persistent challenge.
- Understanding current trends and initiatives is crucial for effective public health strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review recent overweight/obesity and obesity prevention initiatives in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.
- To analyze current BMI monitoring data from 2011 and 2014 for the Nordic Region.
- To estimate overall overweight/obesity and obesity prevalences in the Nordic Region.
Main Methods:
- Review of national obesity prevention initiatives in four Nordic countries.
- Analysis of BMI monitoring data from 2011 and 2014.
- Calculation of prevalence estimates for overweight/obesity and obesity.
Main Results:
- Adult obesity prevalence increased from 2011 to 2014 in the Nordic Region.
- No significant changes were observed in childhood BMI or overweight/obesity prevalence.
- Mean BMI and overall overweight/obesity prevalence showed no significant increases during the study period.
- Obesity prevention initiatives across the studied Nordic countries are largely similar.
Conclusions:
- While adult obesity shows an increasing trend, overall overweight/obesity and childhood rates remain stable.
- Nordic obesity prevention strategies are broadly consistent, reflecting cooperation and similar societal structures.
- Continued monitoring and adaptation of prevention efforts are necessary to address evolving obesity trends.
