A new low-cost virtual instrument, VIEM, measures real-time emissions (O2, NO, CO, SO2, CO2) from diesel engines using biodiesel blends. This system offers a simple, scalable, and user-defined solution for emissions monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Mechanical Engineering
- Computer Science
Background:
- Current emissions measurement systems for internal combustion engines are often expensive and complex.
- There is a need for cost-effective and user-friendly solutions for monitoring engine emissions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a virtual instrument for measuring combustion emissions from diesel engines running on diesel-biodiesel mixtures.
- To present the programming, circuit diagrams, and sensor characterization for the developed system.
Main Methods:
- Developed a virtual instrument named VIEM using LabVIEW 2010®.
- Integrated sensors for O2, NO, CO, SO2, and CO2 with signal conditioning and data acquisition systems.
- Characterized the performance of the employed gas sensors.
Main Results:
- Successfully programmed and implemented the Virtual Instrument for Emissions Measurement (VIEM).
- Provided detailed integrated circuit diagrams for sensor signal conditioning.
- Presented sensor characterization data for O2, NO, CO, SO2, and CO2.
Conclusions:
- VIEM is a low-cost, simple, and user-friendly instrument for real-time emissions monitoring.
- The system is scalable and flexible, allowing for user-defined configurations.
- This virtual instrument offers a viable alternative to traditional, expensive emissions measurement systems.
