Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify which specific components of inhibitory performance predict binge drinking in young adults.
  • To examine withholding a pre-potent response, cancellation of a pre-potent response, and interference inhibition.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-nine college students (mean age 21.92) completed cognitive tasks assessing inhibition: Stop Signal Task (SST), Go/No-Go Task (GNG), and Simon Task.
  • Participants provided biweekly alcohol consumption logs for four weeks.

Main Results:

  • Regression analyses indicated that interference inhibition (Simon Task) and withholding inhibition (GNG) predicted total intoxication and hangover days.
  • Specific inhibitory subcomponents showed predictive value for alcohol consumption.

Conclusions:

  • Certain aspects of response inhibition are more relevant for predicting alcohol consumption habits than others.
  • Findings suggest targeted cognitive interventions may influence young adult drinking behaviors.
