When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. Summary

Allergic sensitization in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients correlates with elevated serum interleukin-16 (IL-16) and total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. This finding suggests IL-16 may play a role in AD-related allergic responses.

Background:

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease often associated with allergic sensitization.
  • Interleukin-16 (IL-16) is a cytokine implicated in immune responses, but its role in AD pathogenesis requires further clarification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between allergic sensitization in AD patients and their serum IL-16 levels.
  • To compare IL-16 and IgE levels in AD patients with healthy controls and psoriasis patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum IL-16, total IgE, and specific IgE levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • Eosinophil counts and skin-prick testing were performed.
  • AD patients were categorized into sensitized and non-sensitized groups based on IgE levels and skin-prick test results.

Main Results:

  • AD patients exhibited significantly higher serum IL-16 levels compared to healthy volunteers and psoriasis patients (P < 0.001).
  • Total serum IgE levels showed a significant correlation with serum IL-16 levels and eosinophil counts.

  • Serum IL-16 may be a potential biomarker for allergic sensitivity in atopic dermatitis.
  • The correlation between IL-16 and allergic sensitivity in AD warrants further investigation.
