Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Aneurysms of the aorta are uncommon, with tubercular involvement being exceptionally rare.
  • The first documented cases of tubercular aortitis and mycotic aortic aneurysms date back to the late 19th century.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of tubercular aortic aneurysms presents significant challenges due to non-specific gross appearances and diagnostic limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of a young female patient with a tubercular aortic aneurysm.
  • To emphasize the diagnostic difficulties associated with tubercular aortic aneurysms.
  • To highlight the importance of considering tuberculosis in aortic aneurysm cases, especially in endemic regions.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a young female patient.

  • Initial diagnosis and treatment for pleural effusion.
  • Subsequent identification and diagnosis of an aortic aneurysm.
  • Confirmation of the tubercular etiology of the aortic aneurysm.
  • Main Results:

    • A young female patient presented with pleural effusion, treated with antitubercular therapy.
    • An aortic aneurysm was discovered during the course of her treatment.
    • The aortic aneurysm was confirmed to be of tubercular origin.

    Conclusions:

    • Tubercular aortic aneurysms are rare and pose diagnostic challenges.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management.
    • This case underscores the need for a high index of suspicion for tuberculosis in aortic pathology.
