Discoid lupus erythematosus can cause acute corneal issues. Topical corticosteroids effectively treated stromal keratitis in these two patients, demonstrating a promising therapeutic response.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition primarily affecting the skin.
  • Ocular manifestations of DLE are rare, with corneal involvement being exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • Two patients with established DLE presented with sudden onset of unilateral corneal stromal infiltration and edema.
  • Clinical examination ruled out infectious etiologies for the keratitis.

Findings:

  • Both patients experienced rapid improvement following treatment with topical corticosteroids.
  • This study documents the first reported cases of DLE-associated stromal keratitis with a documented positive response to corticosteroid therapy.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Topical corticosteroids appear to be an effective treatment for DLE-associated stromal keratitis.
  • Increased awareness of this rare ocular complication of DLE is warranted among clinicians.
