Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Maxillary Sinus Procedures

Background:

  • Caldwell Luc surgery (CWS), established over a century ago, aims to replace diseased maxillary sinus mucosa.
  • Historically, CWS evolved beyond its primary indication, serving as an approach to adjacent anatomical structures.

Observation:

  • A retrospective analysis of CWS was conducted between 2002 and 2014 at two Bangalore-based hospitals.
  • The study reviewed indications, surgical techniques, and patient outcomes associated with CWS.

Findings:

  • Caldwell Luc surgery demonstrated a high degree of versatility, with various indications identified.
  • While most complications were minor and transient, permanent tooth anesthesia and nasal vestibular stenosis were noted.
  • The study suggests that with appropriate expertise and indications, CWS remains a valuable surgical option.
