Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Anatomy
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Nasal turbinate variations are increasingly identified with advanced imaging.
  • Bifid inferior turbinate is a rare anatomical anomaly with limited reported cases.
  • This condition can be challenging to diagnose via nasal endoscopy alone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of rare inferior nasal turbinate anomalies.
  • To assess the occurrence of bifid inferior turbinate in patients with sinonasal disease.
  • To present the first prospective study on bifid inferior turbinates.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluation of 1000 patients undergoing nasal endoscopy for sinonasal disease.
  • Assessment for rare inferior nasal turbinate anomalies.
  • Utilizing paranasal sinus computed tomography for diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Five cases of bifid inferior turbinate were identified among the 1000 patients.
  • The study confirms the rarity of this anatomical variation.
  • Bifid inferior turbinate was diagnosed in patients with sinonasal disease.

Conclusions:

  • Bifid inferior turbinate is a rare anomaly that may be overlooked during endoscopic evaluation.
  • Prospective studies are crucial for understanding the prevalence of rare anatomical variations.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the clinical significance of bifid inferior turbinates.
