Background:

The role of the Chief Clinical Informatics Officer (CCIO) is currently heterogeneous, with varying responsibilities and backgrounds across organizations.
Existing titles like Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) and Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) are encompassed by the broader CCIO designation.
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) recognized the need for clearer guidelines on CCIO knowledge, education, and skillsets.

Purpose of the Study:

To address challenges in the professional development and hiring of CCIOs.
To delineate the essential knowledge, education, and skillsets for CCIOs.
To provide recommendations for CCIO education and training.

Main Methods:

Development of recommendations by an AMIA task force.
Focus on a common core of knowledge and skills for CCIOs.
Consideration of individual differences based on specific Clinical Informatics focus.

Main Results:

The CCIO role, while diverse, is moving towards increased homogeneity due to a growing body of Clinical Informatics knowledge and certification efforts.
Recommendations emphasize the need for clearly defined and specified Clinical Informatics education and training for CCIOs.
