Summary

Pedometer-based walking programs effectively increased physical activity and improved leg muscle mass in sedentary older adults. This 6-month intervention also reduced fear of falling and enhanced physical performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a pedometer intervention for sedentary older adults.
  • Assess improvements in physical activity, fear of falling, physical performance, and leg muscle mass.

Main Methods:

  • Pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 87 sedentary older adults in Japan.
  • Intervention group: 6-month pedometer program with monthly step increase goals.
  • Control group: No intervention.

  • High adherence (93%) to the 6-month pedometer protocol.
  • Intervention group significantly increased daily steps by 83.4%.
  • Pedometer program improved physical activity, reduced fear of falling, and enhanced physical performance and leg muscle mass (P<0.05).

  • Pedometer-based behavioral change programs are effective for sedentary older adults.
  • Interventions can improve key health indicators including physical activity, balance, and muscle mass.
