    Summary

A 20-day ketoconazole treatment is recommended for pityriasis versicolor, as 10-day courses showed higher relapse rates. Daily baths with salicylic acid and sulfur soap are suggested for prevention.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Mycology

    Background:

    • Pityriasis versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection.
    • Relapse rates and optimal treatment durations require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of different ketoconazole treatment durations for pityriasis versicolor.
    • To identify risk factors and preventive measures for pityriasis versicolor.

    Main Methods:

    • Seventy-six patients with extensive pityriasis versicolor were randomized into three groups.
    • Patients received oral ketoconazole at 200 mg daily for 10, 20, or 30 days.
    • Follow-up included clinical assessment at 6 months, with relapse monitoring.

    Main Results:

    • Relapses occurred in 6 out of 8 patients who received ketoconazole for only 10 days.
    • Patients treated for 20 days showed fewer relapses compared to the 10-day group.
    • The infection was more prevalent in males and predominantly affected the 21-30 age group, with the back, chest, and upper extremities being common sites.

    Conclusions:

    • A minimum treatment duration of 20 days with ketoconazole is recommended for pityriasis versicolor.
    • Daily bathing with salicylic acid and sulfur soap may serve as a preventive measure.
    • Pityriasis versicolor affects a wide age range, with a higher incidence in males.
