Summary

Fungal food obstruction can cause intestinal ileus, particularly in patients with pre-existing gut stenosis. Careful chewing of mushrooms is advised to prevent this rare but serious complication.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency.
  • Fungal bezoars are a rare cause of gastrointestinal obstruction.

Observation:

  • Two cases of fungal-induced obstruction ileus were surgically treated since 1982.
  • Both patients presented with pre-existing intestinal stenosis attributed to adhesions and Crohn's disease, respectively.

Findings:

  • Undigested mushrooms can retain their shape and size, leading to impaction within stenotic segments of the bowel.
  • This mechanical blockage by fungal material can precipitate acute intestinal ileus.

Implications:

  • Patients with intestinal stenosis are at high risk for fungal food obstruction.
  • Dietary recommendations should include advising high-risk individuals to avoid mushrooms or ensure thorough mastication to prevent ileus.
