Calprotectin could be a potential biomarker for acute appendicitis

Summary

Acute appendicitis is a common reason for emergency surgery, but many operations still turn out unnecessary. This study looked at a protein called calprotectin in appendix tissue to see if it could help diagnose the condition. Researchers used special stains to detect calprotectin in appendix samples from patients who had surgery. They found that calprotectin was present in all inflamed appendixes but not in healthy ones. This suggests calprotectin might be a useful marker for identifying appendicitis. The study also raises the possibility of using calprotectin in stool tests as a future diagnostic tool. These findings could help improve preoperative screening and reduce the number of unnecessary surgeries.
