The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.3K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

    Summary

Intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) is a feasible treatment for early-stage male breast cancer. This approach, previously only used in women, was successfully applied to a male patient, offering a potential alternative to traditional radiotherapy.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Radiation Oncology

    Background:

    • Male breast cancer is rare, often diagnosed at advanced stages, and typically treated with mastectomy.
    • Early-stage male breast cancer can be managed conservatively with lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and whole-breast external beam radiotherapy.
    • Intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) is an established alternative to whole-breast external beam radiotherapy for select female breast cancer patients.

    Observation:

    • A 56-year-old male patient with early breast cancer (pT1N0) underwent lumpectomy with nipple-areola complex excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
    • The patient received intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) using electron beams (IOERT) as part of his treatment.
    • This represents the first reported use of IORT in a male patient with early breast cancer.

    Findings:

    • The application of IOERT in this male patient with early breast cancer was technically feasible.
    • The treatment combination of lumpectomy, SLN biopsy, and IOERT was successfully administered.

    Implications:

    • Intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) may be a viable treatment option for men with early-stage breast cancer.
    • This case expands the potential applications of IORT beyond female patients.
    • Further research is warranted to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of IORT in male breast cancer patients.
