    Summary

Elevated levels of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) were found in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). These findings suggest an inflammatory basis for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal Diseases
    • Inflammation

    Background:

    • Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) frequently leads to surgical failure in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
    • Understanding the underlying mechanisms of PVR is crucial for improving surgical outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify vitreous levels of G-CSF and MCP-1 in RRD patients.
    • To compare these levels with a control group.
    • To investigate biomarker differences in RRD with and without PVR.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study involving 40 RRD patients and 20 controls.
    • Vitreous samples collected during vitrectomy.
    • Cytokine analysis using a fluorescent bead-based multiplex assay.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly higher G-CSF and MCP-1 concentrations in RRD patients versus controls.
    • MCP-1 levels were markedly elevated in RRD patients who developed PVR compared to those without PVR.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated G-CSF and MCP-1 in RRD vitreous support an inflammatory component in PVR.
    • These cytokines may serve as biomarkers for PVR development.
