Background:

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the Bahamas.
This study represents the first effort to pinpoint islands with the highest breast cancer incidence.

Purpose of the Study:

To delineate the sociodemographic and spatial characteristics of breast cancer cases in the Bahamas between 2009 and 2011.
To identify geographical patterns and high-risk areas for breast cancer within the Bahamian archipelago.

Main Methods:

A retrospective review of medical records for all confirmed breast cancer cases from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2011.
Geocoding of patient addresses and spatial mapping using ArcGIS 10.0, integrating data from the National Oncology Board of the Bahamas.

Main Results:

A total of 270 patients were included. Breast cancer incidence rates were 51.4, 45.4, and 51.4 per year for 2009-2011.
The majority of cases occurred in women of African origin, with a mean age at diagnosis of 56.6 years. Ductal carcinoma, Grade II or higher, and late-stage (≥ Stage II) diagnoses were most common.
Spatial analysis identified a significant cluster of breast cancer cases on New Providence Island, with higher densities in central and eastern regions.

Conclusions:

New Providence Island exhibits the highest incidence of breast cancer across the Bahamas.
The rising trend in breast cancer among younger women signals a potential future strain on Bahamian healthcare resources.
