Summary

Seasonal urticaria and angioedema in a child were caused by Timothy grass pollen allergy. Desensitization therapy using Timothy grass pollen extract effectively treated the severe allergic reactions.

Background:

  • Seasonal urticaria and angioedema can be debilitating allergic conditions.
  • Grass pollen sensitivity is a common trigger for allergic rhinitis and asthma, but less frequently reported as a cause of severe urticaria and angioedema.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old boy presented with severe, incapacitating seasonal urticaria and angioedema.
  • Symptoms were strongly correlated with exposure to grass pollen during the pollen season.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with a specific sensitivity to Timothy grass pollen.
  • Desensitization therapy utilizing Timothy grass pollen extract led to a significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life.

Implications:

  • This case highlights Timothy grass pollen as a potential, albeit uncommon, cause of severe urticaria and angioedema in children.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) or subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) with grass pollen extracts may be a viable therapeutic option for select patients with refractory allergic urticaria and angioedema.
