Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (hip, knee, shoulder) often inquire about returning to golf.
  • Concerns include postoperative participation and impact on golf performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Review literature on golf participation after major joint arthroplasty.
  • Examine surgery's effects on golf performance.
  • Provide surgeon recommendations for golfers post-arthroplasty.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of Medline database using terms 'golf' and 'arthroplasty'.
  • Web-based search for clinical practice recommendations post-arthroplasty.
  • Formulation of guidelines based on reviewed research.

Main Results:

  • Total joint arthroplasty generally improves pain during golfing.
  • Most patients successfully return to golf post-surgery.
  • Variable improvements in sport-specific outcomes are observed.

Conclusions:

  • Golfers can safely return to playing golf after total hip, knee, and shoulder arthroplasty.
  • Recommendations for patient counseling are based on literature and clinical experience.
  • Arthroplasty can facilitate a return to sport for golfers.
