Background:

  • Accurate assessment of stroke knowledge (SK) is fundamental for understanding, monitoring, and improving patient and public SK.
  • Effective interventions rely on reliable measures of stroke knowledge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing stroke knowledge tests.
  • To appraise the conceptual basis, feasibility, and psychometric properties of identified SK tests.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a 2-step systematic search of four electronic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus) from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2014.
  • Identified and appraised 59 stroke knowledge tests from 93 relevant articles.

Main Results:

  • Only 2 of the 59 identified SK tests had at least one validated psychometric property (Stroke Knowledge Test and Stroke Action Test).
  • The Stroke Knowledge Test, while rigorously developed and feasible, exhibited limitations including an unarticulated conceptual basis and inadequate internal consistency reliability (α = .65).
  • No single SK test met all criteria for accurate and reliable assessment.

Conclusions:

  • Current stroke knowledge assessment tools are insufficient for accurately and reliably promoting stroke prevention and management.
  • There is a need to revise existing stroke knowledge tests or develop new ones to improve assessment capabilities.
