Background:

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and alcohol use are significant public health concerns globally.
Understanding the prevalence and correlates of IPV in diverse populations is crucial for targeted interventions.
Urban India presents a unique socio-cultural context for examining these issues.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and alcohol use in an urban Indian population.
To determine the correlation between IPV and alcohol consumption, as well as other socio-demographic factors.
To identify protective factors against IPV in this population.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted in Pune, India.
The Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream (HITS) scale and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) were utilized.
Systematic random sampling and regression analysis were employed to analyze data from 318 individuals.

Main Results:

IPV prevalence was 16%, predominantly affecting women. Alcohol use prevalence was 44%, with 8.9% being harmful users.
Male alcohol consumption was a significant risk factor for IPV (σ = +0.524; P< 0.001).
Higher age at marriage (P = 0.019) and financial support from in-laws (P = 0.040) were significantly protective against IPV.

Conclusions:

IPV prevalence in this urban Indian setting was below the national average, with verbal abuse being most common.
Alcohol use prevalence exceeded the national average, though harmful use was lower.
While education and income did not significantly protect women from IPV, increased age at marriage and support from in-laws demonstrated protective effects.
