Peripheral blood and bone marrow abnormalities are common in advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, particularly in AIDS group IV patients. Bone marrow examination is valuable for microbiological cultures, especially for Mycobacterium avium intracellulare (MAI) infection.
