Summary

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a feasible and effective minimally invasive option for localized prostate cancer in renal transplant recipients (RTRs). This study shows successful outcomes with stable graft function and negative surgical margins in three RTR patients.

Background:

  • Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a minimally invasive surgical approach.
  • Renal transplant recipients (RTRs) with localized prostate cancer require effective treatment options.

Observation:

  • Three RTRs underwent RARP for localized prostate cancer between 2011 and 2015.
  • All procedures were completed successfully without major complications.

Findings:

  • Mean operation time was 162 minutes with minimal blood loss (mean 52 mL), avoiding transfusions.
  • Serum creatinine levels remained stable, indicating preserved kidney graft function post-surgery.
  • Pathological analysis confirmed negative surgical margins and organ-confined disease in all patients.

Implications:

  • RARP demonstrates feasibility and efficacy in carefully selected RTRs with localized prostate cancer.
  • Minimally invasive surgery can be safely performed in RTRs without compromising graft function.
  • This approach offers a potentially effective treatment for prostate cancer in an immunocompromised population.
