Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the exercise intensity during power wheelchair soccer for individuals with mobility impairments.
  • To compare exercise intensity during game play to resting conditions.
  • To assess the perceived exertion during power wheelchair soccer.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 30 participants with severe mobility impairments.
  • Portable metabolic carts were used to measure oxygen consumption (V˙o2) at rest and during power wheelchair soccer games.
  • Rating of perceived exertion was also collected during game play.

Main Results:

  • Oxygen consumption (V˙o2) significantly increased by 34% from rest (1.35 ± 0.47 METs) to game play (1.81 ± 0.65 METs) (P<.01).

Conclusions:

  • Power wheelchair soccer elicits a light-intensity exercise response in individuals with severe mobility impairments.
  • While not meeting the intensity for reduced secondary disease risk (3 METs), the exercise intensity surpasses the threshold (1.5 METs) for improving functional capacity and daily living activities.
  • Power wheelchair soccer is a viable option for promoting physical activity and functional improvements in this population.
