Background:

  • Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a common vascular disorder affecting the retina.
  • Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is a form of glaucoma where optic nerve damage occurs despite normal intraocular pressure.
  • Investigating the co-occurrence and characteristics of NTG-suspect eyes in BRVO patients is crucial for understanding potential shared risk factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of normal tension glaucoma (NTG)-suspect eyes in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
  • To analyze the optic nerve head (ONH) characteristics of these NTG-suspect eyes.
  • To compare the prevalence in the Korean population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective observational study was conducted on 445 BRVO eyes diagnosed between March 2005 and December 2011.
  • Prevalence of NTG-suspect eyes in BRVO was compared to a previous population-based study.
  • NTG-suspect cases were categorized into three groups based on optic disc morphology.

Main Results:

  • Out of 415 analyzed BRVO eyes, 4.3% were diagnosed as NTG-suspect, a prevalence not significantly different from the general Korean population (P=0.09).
  • NTG-suspect eyes were classified into: disc rim notching/thinning (55.6%), optic cup-sited hemorrhage (16.7%), and disc rim thinning/pallor (27.8%).
  • NTG-suspect findings in fellow eyes were observed in 80% of group 1 and 67% of group 2, but not in group 3 (P=0.01).

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of NTG-suspect eyes in BRVO patients is comparable to the general Korean population.
  • The findings suggest no common vascular pathogenesis between BRVO and glaucoma.
  • Specific optic nerve head morphologies in NTG-suspect BRVO eyes may indicate different underlying mechanisms or risks.
