Health Education Research 17, 5, 552- 561 Health education strategies are increasingly subject to scrutiny in order to foster evidence-based practice. This paper describes the planning stage of a community study of the effectiveness of multiple interventions. Groups were encouraged to take up exercise, or improve their nutrition, or undertake both combined. The control group received fall prevention materials. Information technology was employed to maximise the effectiveness of newsletters, and telephone calls from a 'personal behavior change coach' trained in 'brief motivational interviewing strategies'. It would be interesting to know if such an approach has been employed in the UK.
