New diagnostic criteria for focal mastitis identified using MR-Mammography (MRM) were prospectively evaluated. The criteria proved reliable, with most patients showing complete remission, indicating effective diagnosis of focal mastitis.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Oncology
- Breast Imaging
Background:
- Focal mastitis can present diagnostic challenges in MR-Mammography (MRM).
- Retrospective analysis identified potential diagnostic criteria for focal mastitis.
- Prospective validation of these criteria is essential for clinical utility.
Purpose of the Study:
- To prospectively evaluate newly discovered diagnostic criteria for focal mastitis in MRM.
- To assess the reliability of these MRM criteria in a clinical setting.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 1975 patients examined between January 2010 and December 2011.
- Identification of 29 patients meeting the established focal mastitis diagnostic criteria.
- Follow-up imaging and, where necessary, biopsy for histological correlation.
Main Results:
- Of 29 patients with focal mastitis criteria, 28 demonstrated complete remission on follow-up scans.
- One patient with persistent findings was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) after biopsy.
- The criteria showed high sensitivity for identifying focal mastitis with benign outcomes.
Conclusions:
- The identified morphologic, kinetic, and follow-up criteria are a reliable diagnostic indicator for focal mastitis.
- These criteria aid in differentiating focal mastitis from malignancy, potentially reducing unnecessary biopsies.
- Prospective evaluation supports the clinical applicability of these MRM diagnostic standards.
