Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces antimicrobial bacteriocins, some similar to lantibiotics. This review classifies Bt bacteriocins by molecular weight and function, highlighting their potential for controlling foodborne pathogens and in environmental and medical applications.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces diverse metabolites, including insecticidal Cry, Vip, Cyt proteins, and parasporins with anticancer activity.
- Bt also synthesizes antimicrobial compounds, notably bacteriocins, some resembling lantibiotics and Class IIa peptides from lactic acid bacteria.
- Existing classifications for Bt bacteriocins are lacking, necessitating a structured approach based on their properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and classify bacteriocins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) based on molecular weight and functionality.
- To explore the potential applications of Bt bacteriocins in various fields, including food safety, environmental management, and medicine.
- To highlight Bt as a promising source for novel bacteriocins with significant antimicrobial activities.
Main Methods:
- Literature review and analysis of reported Bt bacteriocins.
- Classification of bacteriocins based on molecular weight.
- Grouping of bacteriocins according to their functional properties and spectrum of activity.
Main Results:
- Bacteriocins produced by Bt exhibit inhibitory activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and to a lesser extent, fungi.
- A proposed classification system for Bt bacteriocins based on molecular weight and functionality has been developed.
- Bt bacteriocins represent a valuable resource for developing novel antimicrobial agents.
Conclusions:
- Bacillus thuringiensis bacteriocins are a diverse group of antimicrobial peptides with significant potential.
- The classification presented aids in understanding and utilizing these molecules effectively.
- Bt bacteriocins offer promising alternatives for controlling foodborne pathogens and addressing environmental and medical challenges.

Transgenic Plants
The first-ever transgenic plant was a tobacco plant developed in 1983 that showed resistance against the tobacco mosaic virus. Since then, many transgenic plants have been developed and commercialized for improving the agricultural, ornamental, and horticultural value of a crop plant. Transgenic...
