Summary

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an emerging technique for treating spinal tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the safety of a novel radiofrequency ablation system (SpineSTAR) for spinal metastases.
  • To assess potential temperature-associated risks to adjacent spinal tissues during RFA procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A human cadaveric spine model (lumbar and thoracic vertebrae) was utilized.
  • Tumor masses were simulated and ablated using the SpineSTAR electrode.
  • Temperatures of the vertebra, epidural space, and neural foramen were measured using thermocouples.

Main Results:

  • Temperatures near the ablation zone in lumbar vertebrae reached 46.4°C and in thoracic vertebrae reached 44.4°C.
  • Temperatures in the neural foramen and epidural space remained within safe physiological limits.
  • No significant differences in temperature distribution were observed between lumbar and thoracic vertebrae.

Conclusions:

  • Radiofrequency ablation of spinal metastases using the SpineSTAR electrode is a safe procedure.
  • The method poses minimal temperature-related risks to adjacent spinal tissues.
  • This technique shows promise for the management of spinal metastases.
