Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are rare malignant tumors originating from fatty tissues in the abdominal cavity.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old female presented with a large, avascular, fatty mass displacing the right kidney.
  • Imaging studies including ultrasonography, CT, and MRI revealed a massive retroperitoneal tumor.
  • MRI was particularly effective in characterizing the lipomatous nature of the mass.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of the 2,010g tumor, including the right kidney, was performed.
  • Histological examination confirmed a well-differentiated liposarcoma.
  • The patient recovered well following surgery and chemotherapy.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic utility of MRI in identifying retroperitoneal liposarcomas.
  • Advanced imaging techniques like MRI can aid in preoperative diagnosis and surgical planning for rare retroperitoneal tumors.
  • Further research into MRI's role in differentiating liposarcoma subtypes is warranted.
