Summary

Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) infection can mimic appendicitis in children, leading to unnecessary surgery. Prompt recognition of pinworm symptoms can prevent invasive procedures and ensure effective treatment with medication.

  • A teenage girl presented with right iliac fossa pain, initially diagnosed as non-specific.
  • Standard investigations including blood tests, urine analysis, and ultrasound were inconclusive.
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed no significant pathology but identified numerous pinworms during appendicectomy.

Findings:

  • The patient's right iliac fossa pain resolved completely after appendicectomy and pinworm treatment.
