    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Large scale lipoplasty (surgical fat removal) is safe, even in large volumes. Complication rates do not increase with extracted fat volume when proper fluid management and blood transfusions are used.

    Area of Science:

    • Plastic Surgery
    • Aesthetic Surgery

    Background:

    • Traditionally, large volume lipoplasty procedures were considered high-risk.
    • Accumulating clinical experience challenges these prior beliefs regarding safety.

    Observation:

    • Over 300 patients underwent large scale lipoplasty, with fat extraction volumes ranging from 2500 to 8000 cc.
    • Postoperative complication incidence was evaluated in relation to extracted fat volume.

    Findings:

    • The incidence of postoperative complications was not directly correlated with the volume of fat extracted.
    • Preoperative fluid loading, intraoperative fluid management, and autologous whole blood transfusions were associated with reduced complication risks.

    Implications:

    • Single-stage large volume lipoplasty (>2500 cc) can be a safe and appropriate alternative to staged procedures when indicated.
