Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of a group-based sprint interval training intervention on athletic performance and psychological outcomes.
  • To compare the effects of "true group", aggregate, and individual training conditions.

Main Methods:

  • 53 amateur athletes participated in a 4-week SIT program (3 sessions/week).
  • Participants were assigned to "true group", aggregate, or individual conditions.
  • Physiological (maximal oxygen uptake, time-trial performance, anaerobic power) and psychological (motivation, self-efficacy) measures were assessed.

Main Results:

  • All participants showed significant improvements in maximal oxygen uptake, time-trial performance, and anaerobic power regardless of condition.
  • Significant differences between groups were observed for motivation, task self-efficacy, and scheduling self-efficacy.
  • The "true group" showed greater motivation improvement, while aggregate and individual conditions improved self-efficacy more.

Conclusions:

  • While SIT effectively enhances athletic performance, the group-based intervention did not provide additional physiological benefits.
  • Group dynamics influenced psychological outcomes, with varying effects on motivation and self-efficacy across conditions.
