Area of Science:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Robotic Surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic gastrectomy for cancer presents technical challenges.
  • Robotic technology enhances reconstruction and dissection, aiding complex procedures.
  • Robotic assistance shows potential advantages for lymphadenectomy in gastric cancer surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Illustrate the technique of robotic gastrectomy.
  • Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of robotic gastrectomy.
  • Review current literature on robotic gastrectomy outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Describe robot-assisted distal and total gastrectomy techniques.
  • Assess short-term and long-term oncologic outcomes.
  • Compare robotic gastrectomy with laparoscopic and open surgery.

Main Results:

  • Robotic gastrectomy is as safe and effective as conventional methods for gastric cancer.
  • Robotic procedures may involve longer operative times but show decreased blood loss compared to laparoscopy.
  • Immediate oncologic measures like lymph node yield and margin status are encouraging.

Conclusions:

  • Robotic surgery can standardize minimally invasive D2 lymphadenectomy.
  • Robotic gastrectomy enables routine performance of complex lymphadenectomy.
  • Further studies are required to evaluate long-term oncologic outcomes and survival data.
