Summary

This study found normal thyroid function in most amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, suggesting no direct link between ALS and thyroid disorders. Thyroid tests and antibody activity were assessed in 32 individuals.

  • To investigate thyroid function in patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
  • To determine if thyroid abnormalities or antithyroid antibodies are associated with ALS.
  • To explore a potential relationship between thyroid status and ALS.

  • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure triiodothyronine, thyroxine, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and free thyroxine levels.
  • Antithyroid antibody activities were assessed in all participants.
