Summary

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) and external DCR are effective surgeries for nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Endoscopic DCR shows a slightly higher success rate and fewer complications, making it a favorable option.

Background:

  • External dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) was the traditional surgical method for nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • Endoscopic DCR has emerged as a newer alternative surgical technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the surgical outcomes and complication rates of external DCR versus endoscopic DCR.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of both surgical approaches for treating nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study involving 103 patients (109 cases) with nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • Patients underwent either external DCR (55 cases) or endoscopic DCR (54 cases).
  • Surgical outcomes were assessed over a minimum six-month follow-up period.

Main Results:

  • The endoscopic DCR group demonstrated a higher success rate (95%) compared to the external DCR group (90.9%).
  • Endoscopic DCR had a lower rate of revision surgery (5.5% vs. 9.1%) and avoided intraoperative hemorrhage.
  • Complications like keloids and scarring were absent in the external DCR group, while CSF rhinorrhea was not seen in the endoscopic group.

Conclusions:

  • Both external DCR and endoscopic DCR are effective treatments for nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • Endoscopic DCR offers comparable efficacy with potential advantages in reduced complications and hemorrhage.
