Summary

Conjunctival-limbal autograft effectively treats pterygium, preventing recurrence in all cases. This surgical approach is recommended for both primary and recurrent pterygium cases.

Background:

  • Pterygium is hypothesized to stem from limbal stem cell dysfunction.
  • Conjunctival-limbal autograft (CLA) is a proposed treatment for pterygium.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the conjunctival-limbal autograft procedure.
  • To assess outcomes in patients with primary and recurrent pterygium.

Main Methods:

  • 32 eyes of 28 patients with primary (24) or recurrent (8) pterygium underwent CLA.
  • Procedures were performed under peribulbar anesthesia.
  • Postoperative care included topical antibiotics and steroids for two weeks, with follow-up from 6 to 18 months.

Main Results:

  • No pterygium recurrence was observed in any of the treated eyes.
  • No major postoperative complications were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Conjunctival-limbal autograft is a highly effective treatment for pterygium.
  • CLA is the preferred surgical option for both primary and recurrent pterygium.
