Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

1.1K
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients

344
Elderly individuals encompass a diverse population with varying degrees of age-related physiological changes. Defining the elderly presents challenges, as the geriatric population is often arbitrarily categorized as individuals older than 65. However, many individuals in this group lead active and healthy lives, with an increasing number surpassing 85 years and falling into the older elderly category. Physiological changes associated with aging impact performance capacity and homeostatic...

Pharmacodynamics in Geriatric Patients: Effects of Age

309
Age-related pharmacokinetic changes are extensively documented, but understanding age-related pharmacodynamic alterations is relatively limited. This knowledge gap can be partly attributed to the complexity of developing appropriate measures of drug responses compared to bioanalytical methods for determining drug concentrations. Most information regarding age-related differences in human pharmacodynamics originates from cross-sectional studies. However, these studies assume that observed mean...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

812
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Diabetes and Cancer

598
Chronic stress has been linked to both the onset and progression of serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cancer. Type 2 diabetes, a widespread chronic illness, is closely associated with obesity and insulin resistance, both of which often worsen under stress. Studies indicate that men experiencing high levels of chronic stress face a 45% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those with minimal stress. Stress triggers physiological responses that elevate blood...

Pharmacokinetics in Geriatric Patients: Effect of Age on Drug Absorption

793
As individuals age, their body's physiology evolves, affecting drug pharmacokinetics. The most apparent changes occur in the gastrointestinal tract, where an increase in gastric pH, a delay in gastric emptying, and a reduction in gastrointestinal motility are observed. Remarkably, these changes do not substantially modify the absorption of orally administered drugs, particularly those absorbed via passive diffusion.Transdermal drug delivery emerges as a highly viable method for older adults due...

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Oncology
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Health Economics

Background:

  • Cognitive decline is a prevalent issue in older adults diagnosed with cancer.
  • Health utility value is a crucial measure of quality of life in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of cognitive decline on health utility value among older cancer patients.
  • To identify factors influencing health utility in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited patients aged 65+ with malignant lymphoma or multiple myeloma.
  • Assessed cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination and health utility with the EuroQoL-5 (EQ-5D) scale.
  • Employed univariate and multivariate regression analyses to examine associations and control for confounders.

Main Results:

  • 29% of 87 older cancer patients exhibited cognitive decline.
  • Initially, cognitive decline was linked to lower EQ-5D scores (0.67 vs 0.79).
  • Multivariate analysis revealed cognitive decline was not independently associated with EQ-5D scores; female sex and poorer physical condition were significant factors.

Conclusions:

  • While cognitive decline may play a role in reduced health utility for older cancer patients, it is not an independent predictor.
  • Physical condition emerges as a significant confounding factor influencing health utility in this group.
